There’s really nothing more stress relieving after a hard week, or even a hard day, than going to a nice café. There’s just something special about cafes that are peaceful and chill, whether you visit with friends or by yourself. Kathmandu has no shortage of cafes as most of us know, but not every café has this special quality. In fact, it’s actually somewhat rare. So, today we’ve compiled a list of amazing cafes in Kathmandu that are so chill, you won’t want to leave.
1. Kar.ma Coffee
Something about this place feels so calm and ‘earthy’ that it is hard to capture by other cafes. The music here is always on point and the seats are so comfortable that it’s so easy to lose track of time and ‘accidentally’ spend the entire day there. Especially while sipping their delicious coffee and savouring their dishes made from locally sourced ingredients.. They also sell Made in Nepal crafts if you’re interested in supporting Nepali businesses. Apart from that, they also conduct frequent workshops and classes for activities like cooking and art, so keep an eye out for those!

2. Café Joshi
Café Joshi is the place to go if you’re a sucker for minimalism. Their premises have a grey color palette which is great if you want to just unwind with a cup of coffee. They mostly specialize in breakfast, brunch, bakery, and of course, coffee. They have an extensive menu filled with delicious breakfast food which we recommend trying out. Their bakery items are also very good and have everyone raving for it on social media. Visit Café Joshi if you want to start your day right with delicious pancakes and probably stay all day at the cafe
3. Kairos Café
Kairos Café is really a small oasis in the midst of Patan. The food here is fantastic and is also accommodating to people with diet restrictions (gluten free options are available). The drinks menu has a wide variety and a lot of options for people with various tastes. The staff and all are very friendly and will do anything they can to make your dining experience better. The premises are not only immaculate and hygienic, but also very atmospheric. Their outdoor seating under the mural especially, is peaceful and very easy to spend hours either working from the cafe or sitting with your friends and chatting. It is truly one of the more amazing cafes in Kathmandu. We recommend their Everything Bagels with Cream Cheese and Cinnamon Pancakes!
4. Salon de Kathmandu
With a beautiful garden where you can dine under a dimly lit tapestry, Salon de Kathmandu is the place for you if you’re the type to value aesthetic over anything else. That is, of course, not to say that they have nothing else to offer. The food here is delicious and one you can really enjoy with the warm evening breeze. The ambience is fantastic whether you sit indoors or outdoors. The combination of the ambience and food added with sips of something from their extensive drinks menu; we swear you won’t want to leave all day!
5. Bricks Café
Bricks Café is another place that has fantastic ambience. There’s something about cafes that offer outdoor seating that hits differently when it comes to relaxation. Not only do they offer mezzanine and outdoor seating, but a balcony seating option too! They have classic brick walls (hence the name) which look rustic and classy under the dim lighting, so the dining experience there with your friends or loved ones will be perfect. On top of that, their wood fired pizzas are totally to die for. We recommend you visit Bricks Café with your friends on a late Friday afternoon for a perfect day.
6. Yala Mandala Café
Yala Mandala Café is the one you should visit if you want a full on garden view while dining. The architecture of the main premises is beautiful with traditional Nepali style decorations, wooden windows and doors that are painted with traditional Nepali murals. The place is calm and tranquil and the perfect place to take your laptop and get some work done while enjoying your own company. They also have a gallery that displays various types of Nepali/Newari art. In fact, the entire place has a distinct Newari feel to it, from their menu to their decorations; such that you will feel as if you have been teleported back in time. Do visit them if this is something that interests you!
7. Bikalpa Art Café & Bar
Bikalpa Art Café & Bar is a lovely café in Kathmandu to hang out with friends or get some work done. The outdoor area is great for working purposes due to the free space and quiet ambience. You can often spot people sitting there with their laptops open, engrossed in their task. The outside area is great for getting some sun while working, while the inside area is great if you’re an art enthusiast and want to see pieces made by other artists. They also have events and live music on certain days so watch out for those. Overall, consider visiting this place if you need to discuss a group project or even get your individual work done in a quiet and peaceful work space.
8. Café Musicology
Somewhat of a contrast to our above entries, this place is vibrant and more happening. The small premises are almost always full and alive with chatter. As the name suggests, this place is music themed and the quirky and fun décor is proof of that. Everyone here is engrossed in their own conversation and having fun, which makes the environment engaging and light. You can sit and laugh with your friends while eating the great food of this place and drinking from their huge drinks menu. They also offer board games if you want to play with your friends. Overall, this place is quirky and fun, and an amazing cafe in Kathmandu to spend your afternoon in.
